1-13-3...When Does Next Season Start?

Compared to the team's goals set forth in the 2009 Woman's Soccer preview video, I'd say the season has been a forgettable one. I know that's harsh, but as collegiate competitors, I hope the woman's soccer team feels similarly.

Here are the team's results - season complete.

Stop Feeding Fans Cupcakes

Not to sounds like a broken record, but here's another reason I dislike the BCS...

A reason for a playoff system versus the BCS is because athletic directors are leaning towards scheduling cupcakes (Florida vs Charleston Southern), guaranteeing them a win. This is especially true in an environment where one loss could keep a team from reaching the conference or national championship. A playoff system would allow teams to schedule meaningful first games and if lost, seasons wouldn't be a wash.

UVM victory over Boston College. 4-1

Playing Out of Their Minds

Playing out of their minds - this is what the Woman's Hockey team is currently doing. After sweeping Union in the first series of the season, the lady Cats have gone on to split with #4 ranked Clarkson (the highest ranked team UVM has ever beaten).

Before the season started the woman's team stated that their goal was to reach the Hockey East playoffs. After four games they've certainly grabbed my attention.

Highlights

Idaho

Why is no one talking about the Idaho football team and the season's they're having?

The Vandals were picked to finish last in the conference by WAC coaches. However, they are currently 6-1, 3-0 in the WAC and bowl eligible. At this time last year, they were 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference. Two years ago they were 1-6 and 0-3. I could go on but anyone who follows college football knows that the Vandals have been at the bottom for a while.

When will ESPN and others recognize the turnaround?

That said, I've just heard (from a friend) that CollegeGameDay will travel to the state of Idaho for the first time ever when Idaho visits Boise State. Wouldn't that be a kick in the shin for Boise if Idaho beats them, keeping them from another BCS game?!

Cats Headed in the Right Direction

The way Vermont played at Denver last weekend made an impact on the guys at Inside College Hockey. As a fan it's always fun listening to others talk about the Cats. Enjoy.

UVM lost 5 to 4 but looked good. The 5 minute major may have cost them. It will be interesting to see how UVM responds. Do they roar back or fold in game two?

UVM Athletics - Always Classy

The following photo was taken at the 2009 Fall Foliage Golf Classic, which is a tournament to raise money for the UVM Victory Club. The full album can be found here

Is this really the message UVM Athletics wants to send?

Perhaps they should rename the event to Kegs on the Course. Class Class Class.

P.S. - The brochure for this event said, "enjoy a fun filled day including beverages", which makes this gem even more hilarious.

New Brunswick at UVM 10.4.09

Yes, UVM did loose this afternoon but the real test starts Friday at Denver. I know the team will rebound and Coach Sneddon will work hard to correct some of the issues from tonight but it's clear Vermont will miss play makers like Viktor Stalberg. And although Viktor took much of the spotlight last year, it became obvious after one game Dean Strong's absence from the lineup will be sorely missed.

3 Teams. 3 Seasons Over?

What is going on with UVM Athletics these days? The field hockey team lost a heart breaker in double overtime yesterday. They now sit at 1-9. The men's soccer team also lost yesterday, falling to 0-6-3. The woman's soccer team record of 0-7-2 isn't exactly a bright spot either.

As far as men's soccer goes, I think their season isn't over for a couple of reasons. The first being, they have played strong competition thus far and just come up short on a couple of occasions. If the ball bounced a little differently versus Portland, UMass, and Memphis, I wouldn't be talking about this. Reason two their season isn't over yet, America East isn't that strong. For the past three years most of the team's wins come in conference. As long as this continues in '09, UVM will likely make another run at the conference tournament.

That said, I can imagine some fans beginning to question Coach Cormier. A 0 winning percentage at the start of October would cause me question the coach too as well as say he is on the hot seat. However, look at his track record the past three seasons: America East runner up in '06, America East championship and NCAA 2nd round appearance in '07, and America East Semi's appearance in '08. As long as Coach Cormier makes it to the semi's in their year's America East tournament his jobs is safe.

As far a the woman's team goes, Coach Kwame Lloyd probably isn't feeling the heat just yet. After two seasons, Coach Lloyd has his team showing some signs of life and I believe this year's team will fare pretty well in conference after playing a tough non-conference schedule. Plus, you have to believe they will be able to win more than 2.3 games in America East this year, which has been their average the last three seasons.

The field hockey team's record isn't good, but I'm not sure if a tough non-conference schedule is the culprit or something else. I think I'll know more as they get into America East play. That said, I have a sneaking suspicion that America East isn't strong in field hockey either and the Cats will have a reasonable shot at the conference tournament despite a lack luster regular season.

America East play starts this weekend for all teams.
