Missy's Mistake

Back in the 90's, when I was still interested in mountain biking, a friend of mine showed me a picture of downhill word champion, Missy Giove. In that picture Giove was sporting purple hair and a dead piranha around her neck. However, neither of these things captured my adolescent curiosity. My interest in Giove was because she was physically appealing, for lack of a better description. Perhaps it was the fact that she strutted around in sports bras...who knows...I was a teenager.

Nevertheless, I had forgotten about Missy Giove until today. In the following article you'll read that Missy was caught driving a truck containing more than 200lbs of pot. Additionally, the feds seized more than $1 million dollars from her counterpart, Eric Canori and another 200lbs of pot at his home.

Oh Missy... the next bike you'll ride will be a stationary, setup in a gray room with very poor lighting. Your next jersey will not have "the missile" printed on the chest. Missy, you remember that nickname right? The nickname that the sport you loved, affectionately coined for you. Rather your next jersey won't include a name at all but rather a number and probably will only come in orange or some other blase color.

At the start of this post I was laughing but now I actually feel kinda bad for her. Then again, Miss's actions were very stupid.

A New Era

The days of Middlebury, Woodstock and CVU ruling Vermont lacrosse seem to be over. Growing up in Vermont and as a fan of high school lacrosse I was accustomed to hear about the Thompson's (CVU), the Mackey's (Middlebury) and the Wannop's (Woodstock). These names dominated the Vermont lacrosse landscape. Together, these players helped CVU, Middlebury and Woodstock capture numerous state titles during the 90's and into the 2000's

Middlebury and Woodstock were the kings but CVU was always knocking on the door, nipping at their heels. Every year I cheered for CVU but just about every year finshed in frustration - a loss to Woodstock or Middlebury in the semi finals. However, as a fan you could count on one of these teams to be holding the trophy when the dust settled. That's just the way it was.

In those days, no other school had the talent or depth of the big three. Each school had great feeder programs, starting in elementary school. Hank Slauson and Larry Thompson started the one in Shelburne and deserve complete credit for developing the town's interest in the sport. In time, many players coached by Hank and Larry started for CVU and eventually led the Crusaders back to the title game.

Nevertheless, those days seem to be over. Last night South Burlington beat Essex to win the DI state title. The same Rebels that until this season, hadn't beat CVU in 16 years. There was no red, orange, or green in the stands - CVU, Middlebury, and Woodstock had all been eliminated.

I think we've entered into a new era of lacrosse in the state of Vermont. Entitlement to the championship game, which the big three used to have is a thing of the past.

All that being said, don't be surprised if you see CVU hoisting another trophy sooner rather than later. I would say the same for Middlebury and Woodstock, but since these two schools have a small student body, they will find it increasingly difficult to win consistently.

Outrageous!

ESPN's College Football Live is currently airing short videos on college football in each state. For example, when the show spoke about football in the state of Alabama it was all about the Iron Bowl, played between Auburn and Alabama.

Today's video highlight featured football in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Needless to say I was eager to hear what they were going to talk about concerning football in these three states.

Would it be David Ball, originally from Vermont, but played at UNH who ultimately broke Jerry Rice's college receiving yard record? Would they mention how Maine plays football in one of the northern most places in the country and boasts a 10,000 seat stadium! Or since 2000, Maine has produced 17 NFL drafts picks. What about the win that Maine had over Mississippi State, a SEC team, in 2004. Even Middlebury College, a division III school, had their place kicker make an NFL roster - the 2008-09 playoff team, Baltimore Ravens!

Or maybe, just maybe they would talk about football coming back at UVM. After all, thanks to the hard work of Doug Deluca '2010, the Green and Gold are back on the gridiron. UVM has a club team that is again sparking the state's interest in college football. Doug's story as well as UVM football was good enough for The New York Times (click here to the originally story) so was it so unreasonable to think they might mention it??

I guess it was.... none of these great stories were talked about - none! Not one. And if you can believe it, VERMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, and MAINE WERE MENTIONED ONLY ONCE!!! Outrageous!

A True Pioneer for Lacrosse

The departure of Bill Tierney, former head coach at Princeton University, was a shock. What a coup for Denver. My guess is that Coach Tierney plus the suspected addition of his son Seth, will bring DU to the NCAA tournament again in 2010.

Denver is hot for lacrosse and I'm sure Coach Tierney will be able to recruit well. His name alone will bring some East coast kids to the foothills of the Flatirons.

Very interesting development, something I'll be sure to follow throughout the summer.

T.B.

I just read a blurb that UVM's own Tom Brennan won't be back as an ESPN analyst. Not all that surprising I guess - he disappeared even before the NCAA tournament started.

Doug Gottlieb will have to find a new person to cast dirty looks to. HA!
