UVM Woman's Basketball - Building A Strong Resume

Despite losing to UConn by more than 35 points - again, the UVM woman’s basketball team has had tremendous success this season. And although I poke fun at UVM’s losing margin, they did hold UConn to 84 points this year versus 104 points a year ago. Plus, success against UConn is all relative.
In any case, after the out of conference schedule UVM has played they deserve more credit for their accomplishments. UVM is a lock for the NIT tournament and they’re making a strong case for a 13/14 seed in NCAA tournament, provided they do well in conference.
Here’s a quick recap: NC State (ACC), Boston College (ACC), UMass (A-10), and Providence (Big East) have all fallen to the Cats. In fact, their out of conference record stands at 9-2! Add the fact that they played one Big 12 team close, Oklahoma State, and still play Nebraska (Big 12) at home and Dayton (A-10) and Rhode Island (A-10) on the road means they still have opportunities to build their case for a quality seed in the NCAA tourney. Imagine the Cats with an 11-3 out of conference record…

Johnson Named AP's Top Athlete - What?!

What is an athlete? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, an athlete is a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina. Assuming this is a "reasonable" definition, how can a person like NASCARS's Jimmie Johnson be named a top athlete?!

On the popular morning show, Mike and Mike in the Morning, Mike Greenberg began sparing with Mike Golic about this very subject since Tiger Woods winning AP Athlete of the Decade upset some listeners. One of the Mikes, I can't remember which one, suggested the argument was moot and that people shouldn't take the definition so literally.

I disagree. For an industry obsessed with precision, such as wins and loses, stats, records and percentages, how can national awards be so loosely defined?

In any case, how is it possible for Jimmie Johnson to win an athletic award?! He's not an athlete. He's certainly talented but does he display stamina, strength, or agility? I think that anyone who spends their time stationary while competing shouldn't be considered an athlete and therefore not be eligible for athletic awards. This goes for poker players, chess players, archers, and all anglers who aren't actually standing in water even though they're questionable too.

NASCAR's Johnson named AP's top male athlete

UVM Skiing - A Matter Of Attention

Given the success of UVM's basketball and hockey programs it isn't surprising that they receive the most attention from the athletic department. However, as close as these programs are to competing for conference titles and NCAA tournament bids, there is one team on campus competing for a national championship annually. Any guesses?

The UVM men's and woman's ski team might be the most unsung program on campus. Considering they are the closet to winning a NCAA title, it's puzzling why UVM Athletics doesn't put more effort into marketing UVM skiing. The department's effort last year, a season in which two UVM skiers won individual national titles, only included a  welcome banner on the skiing website - talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

First of all, UVM has the facilities. The indoor strength and conditioning center built in 2005 is one of the largest in the Northeast. The center is state-of-the-art and includes eight Olympic platforms, 19 working stations, a 30-yard turf sprint track, as well as ample room for core strengthening activities. UVM's strength and conditioning center should grab the eye of any recruit, whether they raced for Burke Mountain Academy, GMVS, or a school abroad.

UVM's ski teams also race at one of the finest resorts in the country, one with plenty of big name cache - Stowe.

As far as recruiting, Vermont produces some of the finest young skier in the country. Burke Mountain Academy, Green Mountain Valley School, Stratton Mountain School to name a few have all produced Olympians and there's no reason why students from these schools wouldn't want to attend UVM.

UVM also has a terrific coach, Bill Reichelt. In both 2003 and 2005, Reichelt helped lead the Catamounts to a second place finish at the NCAA Ski Championships.

All that separates UVM skiing from a national championship is marketing support by the athletic department. UVM already has elite on campus training facilities, relationships with the nation's best ski academies, access to Stowe, and a winning coach. It's time for UVM Athletics to play their part.

0-12ers Needs Recognition Too

As the 2009 college football season ends two teams will finish without a single victory. Western Kentucky and Eastern Michigan are both 0-12. Ouch.

Trying hard to match WKU and Eastern Michigan's feat were Miami (Ohio), New Mexico, and Washington State, all of whom went 1-11 in 2009. College football fans were a missed field goal and or missed tackle away from celebrating 5 winless teams! Major ouch.

The idea that college football had almost as many winless teams as undefated teams is hysterical.

Enjoy bowl season!

Accuracy in the Sports Industry

I find it bothersome that predictions made by sports journalists, reporters, "experts", and anchors are not revisited for accuracy. Currently these folks foretell, declare, and weigh in on issues without being accountable to standards of precision or correctness.

How many times do you hear someone predict an outcome that sounds outlandish and eventually turns out to be so? (Lou Holtz)

Frustrating to say the least but in an effort to check my precision, I've revisited some of my entries from the past nine months. I've been spot on in some case but in others been wide of the mark.

Back in April I praised UVM men's lacrosse player, Andrew Kelleher, for winning the America East Player of the Year award and said that the recognition he earned would lead to success in recruiting. Andrew is now an assistant coach at Hamilton and UVM's recruiting classes have greatly improved. Zack Telander headlines the class of 2013 and was tabbed by Inside Lacrosse magazine as the nations 30th best midfielder. The class of 2014 also looks strong and includes Derek Braig, who is a total package guy from St Paul's School.

One statement I made that turned out to be completely inaccurate was that Lane Kiffin wouldn't succeed at Tennessee. All that needs to be said is that I'll be watching Lane and the Vols take on Va Tech in the Chick-fil-A bowl on December, 31st.

UVM baseball made headlines this past fall as it was one of two programs cut by University Athletics. While many people wrote letters to the editor and filled discussion boards with their opinion of the decision, I was quick to ask, "what's going to happen with the field?" Sure enough, we still don't know the fate of one of America's oldest ballparks.

Next we come to my prediction of how ESPN's Power Rankings would look at the conclusion of the 2009 college football season. To say Cal and Penn State let me down would be an understatement. Ouch.

Last but not least was my declaration that UMass-Lowell wouldn't handle their preseason hype well and thus wouldn't win Hockey East. I guess we will have to wait a bit longer to see where the River Hawks will finish but so far they've been inconsistent and are currently in 5th place in Hockey East. If the River Hawks were comfortable playing as the hunted their resume would be better, especially considering the parity this year in Hockey East.

The process of review for the purpose of accuracy should be used more in sports. After revisiting some of my blog entries I've learned that more often than not I make accurate sports predictions. I wish we could find out if the same were true for the Lou Holtz's of the world.

If Some Madore is Good, More is Better

Burlington Free Press writer Ted Ryan recently wrote a piece in which he asks who should be the starting goalie for the UVM men's hockey team.

Ummm, Rob Madore.

While it's true that Rob hasn't looked like the same goalie who helped UVM reach the 2009 Frozen Four, let's not forget that his stats are improving, he's got defensemen in front of him who are playing better, and we're entering a critical stretch of the season - Winter break. Why is it even a question of who should start?

Rob has the hot hand and given the fact that UVM plays one team, Dartmouth, before Winter break and before having to play in the Catamount Cup, I want Rob to build upon his momentum rather than let it go to waste. Giving Rob the start would allow him to continue focusing on being calm in net and it would give him ample time to prepare for the Catamount Cup.

Keep in mind that this year's Cup will feature quality teams - Mercyhurst, Alabama-Huntsville, and Minn-Duluth. Alabama-Huntsville has wins over Notre Dame and Air Force. Mercyhurst is tied with Air Force at the top of the AHA. Minn-Duluth has beaten teams such as Col. College, Denver, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

I know Rob is mentally tough but Winter break can seem long and it won't benefit the team if he questions his abilities during the time off. If UVM wants to have success after the break, win the Catamount Cup and put themselves in position to receive another bid to the NCAA tournament, Rob must be #1, starting with Dartmouth.

Divorce is Tiger's Best Option

Since I heard that Tiger Woods would take a break from playing competitive golf, I thought about what would be best for Tiger's career. My conclusion, which may seem odd, is for Tiger to immediately divorce Elin, thus providing him with an understandable situation (divorcĂ©) and would allow him to return to golf sooner rather than later.

After divorcing Elin, Tiger could return to golf relatively soon and presumably continue winning. Nothing helps fans forget drama like success. People love winners and Tiger is certainly a champion. Do you honestly think the public would like Tiger half as much as they do if they knew his true personality? No, he's a jerk. Fans like him because he's the best. The sooner Tiger can get back to playing golf, which could be accomplished via divorce, the quicker fans will forget that he ever committed a sin.

Secondly, divorce is common and as a concept fans get divorce. Once a fan understands what the hero is dealing with forgiveness soon follows. So, even though Tiger cheated on Elin people will pardon Tiger's behavior. After all let's not forget that celebrities and athletes have been forgiven after committing far worse crimes than "indiscretions". Andy Pettit admitted to using HGH yet we now celebrate him as the all time winningest post season pitcher in baseball history.

The consequences of leaving Elin seem considerable but how serious are they? Sure he would surrender millions and lose his family but he's already lost money and it appears Elin will leave him regardless. The best thing for Tiger is to divorce Elin, sincerely apologize, and commit to self improvement. If done, people will no longer have to wonder if Jack's record will be beaten, just wonder when.

A Note to Gene

Hi Gene - My name is Daniel Jacobs and I am passionate about college football. As a fan of the game, having just finished watching the BCS selection show on Fox, I'm incredibly frustrated with the pairing of Boise State and TCU.

Perhaps the current "system" has caused me to develop conspiracy theory's that may or may not have any basis in reality but after reading "Don't expect a BCS Sunday surprise" I thought you might enjoy my latest speculation.

As the season drew to a close, I believe the BCS was rooting for two teams from non-automatic bid conferences to remain BCS eligible so they could be paired against one another rather than against a "big boy" school.

When Boise State TCU was announced I heard the sigh of relief from the automatic qualifiers all the way here in Vermont.

Am I fanish or foolish?

Best,

Daniel

Pre Game Thoughts - UVM at BU

After being asked what my thoughts were about tonight's hockey game between BU and Vermont, a few things came to mind - UVM's recent history vs BU, who will be in net, and can UVM maintain their intensity.

UVM played BU four times last year, splitting the the overall series and obviously the game that mattered most - the Frozen Four semifinal game. However, let's not forget that after getting thumped 5-1 early in the 08-09 season, UVM traveled to Agganis and swept BU - something that had never happened or certainly not since the invention of color tv. Even in last year's Frozen Four game UVM played BU tight, only surrendering in the final moments. In 2007-08 UVM split their series with the Terries and held a 2-1 advantage in games in 2006-07. If history is a guide, there's a good chance UVM will leave Boston with a win.

As far as goaltending this evening, I'm betting on Spillane, who seems to have the hot hand. Madore hasn't played as well as last year and doesn't look like the same goalie who helped lead the Cats to Washington but let's be honest, the defense has been penetrable. On paper Madore appears to be struggling but a comparison like this isn't fair to Rob. During some of the early games the defense completely collapsed in front of Madore. All fans should hope that Rob gets his form back if UVM wishes to make noise in Hockey East going forward, especially since he is the future, but tonight I like Spillane.

UVM's on a two game win streak, something they haven't done since October! For much of the season the Cats have been up and down but I'm thinking the "tough love" that coach Sneddon said he would implement after the Cats' 6-1 loss versus UMass is beginning to sink in.

The Catamounts should win tonight based on how well UVM has played against the Terriers and Spillane's hot hand. Enjoy the game!

Go Cats Go!

Practice Jersey Shout Out...Sort of

Last month I sent an email to Paul Lukas, author of Uni Watch on ESPN.com, about the new UVM men's basketball uniforms. To say he responded would be a lie but I did notice that on a recent Uni Watch blog entry, he did list Vermont, which I'm taking as a shout out.

My email:
Greetings from the Green Mountain State!

Looks like The University of Vermont (UVM) is sporting a new look this year.

Uni Watch blog entry:
OK, one last round of late-breaking college basketball uni updates. In case you missed the first two reports, you can find them here and here. In addition to the schools listed in those columns, we can now add Ball State; Colorado (that's a new silver alternate); Lamar; Milwaukee; New Mexico State; Saint Joseph's; Vermont; and Washington State (we'd already covered the primary uni changes but now it turns out there's a "Cougs" alternate).

See? There it is...Vermont. He even picked one of the photos I originally chose and posted in my blog!

BCS Bowl, My A$$

I don't usually quote myself but exceptions can always be made. Back in August I listened to college football analysts state that Notre Dame had an easy schedule that would surely lead to a BCS bowl bid. Here was my reaction to ND's schedule and brief season outlook.

"I'm not gonna say that ND will go 6-6 this year, but I certainly don't think they'll be headed to a BCS bowl game as I've heard some analysts say. Analysts state that ND's schedule this year is easy, which I disagree with. There are several teams on their schedule that could beat them - Nevada, Michigan, Michigan State, USC, and Stanford."
"I predict that ND will be better than 6-6 but not by a whole lot. Charlie Weis' decided schematic advantage will be proved untrue and his massive ego as well as the fat in his pants will be shown the door."

Looks like even I gave ND too much credit. They did go 6-6 and Charlie Weis was let go.

Enough gloating...

An Issue of Leadership

After UVM's second lopsided loss of the season, a 6-2 drubbing from UMass, coach Kenvin Sneddon said, "We’ve got a lot of talent in there and it’s just not coming together for whatever reason right now."

I have a suspicion that one of the reasons for the team's up and down start is ineffective leadership. A harsh statement for sure but I don't totally fault this year's captains, Kevan Miller and Brian Roloff, for not providing the same level of leadership of Peter Lenes, Dean Strong, and Corey Carlson. Leadership like other skills improves with practice. Peter and Corey served as Assistant Captains for two years. As Captain, Dean led the Cats for two year too. Kevan and Brian will grow into their roles, but it will take time. That said, a loss like the one last night really makes you appreciate what Peter, Dean, and Corey brought to the team.

I also have the suspicion that one of the reasons "it's just not coming together" for the men's hockey team is that current players, maybe non more so than the freshman, are feeling a level of entitlement after the trip to the Frozen Four last year. Hopefully Kevan and Brian can impress upon the team that playing in the post season is earned but if not, I expect coach Sneddon's new policy of "tough love" to go a long way.

Weight issues are root of Mangino's problems - KansasCity.com

The following article is an interesting piece about how Kansas Jaw Hawks coach Mark Mangino's problems all stem from his weight. For those unfamiliar with the current situation at Kansas, it involves the possibility of verbal abuse by Mangino towards some of his players. The article got me thinking about the broader issue of image in college football.

As many of us know, the embattled Charlie Weis has certainly had his difficulties at Notre Dame. Could part of the problem be Charlie's weight? Are high school seniors and juniors less inclined to play for a heavy set coach? As I think about the top coaches in college football, not one of them is overweight - Urban Myer, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Gary Patterson, Chris Peterson, ect. Now think about the heavier set coaches - Charlie Weiss, Mark Mangino, Ralph Friedgen and don't forget Mike Locksley at New Mexico. If what Jason Whitlock is saying is true about Mangino, perhaps Charlie's, Ralph's, and Mike's woes are the result of a similar issue - weight.

Not too long ago I head Colin Cowherd say on his radio show that Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher would make a terrific college coach. One of Colin's reasons was his looks. Jeff, as a handsome guy would be very effective in living rooms recruiting players and coupled with his experience would have success at the college level. Colin said this during the Titans rough opening to the 2009 season.

Maybe image, weight, and a coaches looks play a larger role in college football than we realize or would like to admit.

Enjoy the article

Boise State AD acknowledges scheduling issues

The following article brings up two points that I feel are worth sharing. First of all it demonstrates another negative affect that the BCS "system" has on college football. Secondly, it bring up the notion of one team paying another $1 million dollars to play a football game, serving as a reminder that college football is indeed a business. Lastly, with a home field record of 52-2, one might suggest that Boise State has more than a home field advantage with their blue turf.

Boise State AD acknowledges scheduling issues

As a result of the BCS, teams from the automatic qualifying conferences have no interest or incentive to play teams such as Boise State, now that the BCS determines a national champion. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose. It is no fault of Boise State that they have problems scheduling games, but as I've said before, they are being punished before the season ever starts. This issue is clearly real and I'm glad Boise State is vocalizing their difficulties.

Even in our current world picture where corporations are being bailed out with the assistance of hundreds of millions of dollars, paying $1 million for a football game seems excessive. That said, college football is a business and this story shows just how big a business it is.

On a final note, do you think the blue smurf turf that Boise State plays on serves as more than just a home field advantage? Do you think the NCAA should look into the fairness of asking visiting teams to play on such a dramatically different surface? Food for thought. Then again, maybe their terrific home record is due to visiting teams becoming dizzy from looking at their fans...

Cats Show Off New Look in '09

The men's basketball team at the University of Vermont took another step toward legitimacy when they introduced their uniforms this year. In the past, the team's look has been dated - the yellow piping along the neck and arms in particular -  but that has since changed.

This year, Nike created a clean look for the Cats (an improvement) but the VCat logo on the right leg is still questionable. Check out the new home whites...

Stop Feeding Fans Cupcakes

Not to sounds like a broken record, but here's another reason I dislike the BCS...

A reason for a playoff system versus the BCS is because athletic directors are leaning towards scheduling cupcakes (Florida vs Charleston Southern), guaranteeing them a win. This is especially true in an environment where one loss could keep a team from reaching the conference or national championship. A playoff system would allow teams to schedule meaningful first games and if lost, seasons wouldn't be a wash.

Playing Out of Their Minds

Playing out of their minds - this is what the Woman's Hockey team is currently doing. After sweeping Union in the first series of the season, the lady Cats have gone on to split with #4 ranked Clarkson (the highest ranked team UVM has ever beaten).

Before the season started the woman's team stated that their goal was to reach the Hockey East playoffs. After four games they've certainly grabbed my attention.

Idaho

Why is no one talking about the Idaho football team and the season's they're having?

The Vandals were picked to finish last in the conference by WAC coaches. However, they are currently 6-1, 3-0 in the WAC and bowl eligible. At this time last year, they were 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference. Two years ago they were 1-6 and 0-3. I could go on but anyone who follows college football knows that the Vandals have been at the bottom for a while.

When will ESPN and others recognize the turnaround?

That said, I've just heard (from a friend) that CollegeGameDay will travel to the state of Idaho for the first time ever when Idaho visits Boise State. Wouldn't that be a kick in the shin for Boise if Idaho beats them, keeping them from another BCS game?!

Cats Headed in the Right Direction

The way Vermont played at Denver last weekend made an impact on the guys at Inside College Hockey. As a fan it's always fun listening to others talk about the Cats. Enjoy.

UVM Athletics - Always Classy

The following photo was taken at the 2009 Fall Foliage Golf Classic, which is a tournament to raise money for the UVM Victory Club. The full album can be found here

Is this really the message UVM Athletics wants to send?

Perhaps they should rename the event to Kegs on the Course. Class Class Class.

P.S. - The brochure for this event said, "enjoy a fun filled day including beverages", which makes this gem even more hilarious.

New Brunswick at UVM 10.4.09

Yes, UVM did loose this afternoon but the real test starts Friday at Denver. I know the team will rebound and Coach Sneddon will work hard to correct some of the issues from tonight but it's clear Vermont will miss play makers like Viktor Stalberg. And although Viktor took much of the spotlight last year, it became obvious after one game Dean Strong's absence from the lineup will be sorely missed.

3 Teams. 3 Seasons Over?

What is going on with UVM Athletics these days? The field hockey team lost a heart breaker in double overtime yesterday. They now sit at 1-9. The men's soccer team also lost yesterday, falling to 0-6-3. The woman's soccer team record of 0-7-2 isn't exactly a bright spot either.

As far as men's soccer goes, I think their season isn't over for a couple of reasons. The first being, they have played strong competition thus far and just come up short on a couple of occasions. If the ball bounced a little differently versus Portland, UMass, and Memphis, I wouldn't be talking about this. Reason two their season isn't over yet, America East isn't that strong. For the past three years most of the team's wins come in conference. As long as this continues in '09, UVM will likely make another run at the conference tournament.

That said, I can imagine some fans beginning to question Coach Cormier. A 0 winning percentage at the start of October would cause me question the coach too as well as say he is on the hot seat. However, look at his track record the past three seasons: America East runner up in '06, America East championship and NCAA 2nd round appearance in '07, and America East Semi's appearance in '08. As long as Coach Cormier makes it to the semi's in their year's America East tournament his jobs is safe.

As far a the woman's team goes, Coach Kwame Lloyd probably isn't feeling the heat just yet. After two seasons, Coach Lloyd has his team showing some signs of life and I believe this year's team will fare pretty well in conference after playing a tough non-conference schedule. Plus, you have to believe they will be able to win more than 2.3 games in America East this year, which has been their average the last three seasons.

The field hockey team's record isn't good, but I'm not sure if a tough non-conference schedule is the culprit or something else. I think I'll know more as they get into America East play. That said, I have a sneaking suspicion that America East isn't strong in field hockey either and the Cats will have a reasonable shot at the conference tournament despite a lack luster regular season.

America East play starts this weekend for all teams.

UMass Lowell - Can They Handle the Hype?

After spending much of the recent past at the bottom of Hockey East, UMass Lowell finds itself in uncharted waters prior to the season starting - 2nd. My question is: Can they handle the hype?

We've seen teams such as the Ole Miss football team fall flat after being raved about and ranked high in pre-season polls. Like the Rebels, I believe UMass - Lowell will face similar pressures and it will be interesting to watch the River Hawks play as the hunted and not the hunter.

And if you believe that UMass - Lowell isn't paying attention to the polls, enjoy the following picture. I have a feeling the pressure that's being added by the school combined with their new role as top dog and not underdog will result in a up and down season but I'll be watching them for sure.

Thank You Quint

In the following video, Quint Kessenich (ESPN sideline reporter and Inside Lacrosse contributor) discusses how there are lessons to be taken away from other college sports such as football and basketball. One point I particularly like is that in sports such as football, the fan experience is much more than the game, it includes tail gates, cheerleaders, music, and mascots. I've always referred to this things are pageantry. Call it what you want, I think Quint brings up some great points and I hope his ideas translate into change for college lacrosse.

Soccer or Hockey Part II

As a follow up to my earlier post, I wanted to mention a few things that seriously might keep the Men's Soccer team from winning their first game before the Men's Hockey team wins theirs.

Next up on the Men's Soccer schedule is Dartmouth. The Big Green recently dropped from the national rankings but had been ranked #15. Wednesday's game in Hanover will be tough and the Cats would be fortunate to come away with a win. That said, they will have one more opportunity before the Hockey team plays Sunday in their season opener.

Awaiting the Cats on Saturday will be a surprisingly talented UMBC team. Despite being picked to finish last in America East, the Retrievers have raced out to a 9-0 record and a #18 national ranking.

I said the Men's Soccer team may not win a game before the Men's Hockey team as a joke, but there's a real possibility it could become reality.

Soccer or Hockey - Who Will Win First?

October is quickly approaching and UVM soccer has yet to win a game. Oh, and this is true for both teams, men's and woman's.

The men are 0-5-3 and the woman are 0-7-2.

It's entirely possible that the men's hockey team could win before either soccer team.

A Loss, A Disappearance, and "The Best"

In response to USC's loss to Washington this past weekend, LA Times columnist TJ Simers has written an interesting piece that I've shared below. Finally, someone has brought up the disappearance of Mitch Mustain. Mustain had an impressive record prior to transferring to USC and now has dropped off the radar. I feel bad for Mitch, once a starter and now a Senior, who has yet to throw more than 20 times for the Trojans.

Hope you enjoy TJ's pointed writing style as much as I did.

I Don't Mean to Brag, But.....

One quarter of the 2009 college football season is over and another one of my preseason predictions is looking better and better.

My friend and I took a stab at who would be in the top five at the close of the year and as of today's ESPN Power Rankings, I have the top five correct, just not the order.

College Football Power Rankings - Week 3
 RK (LW)TEAMRECPTSCOMMENT
1 (1)Florida (13)3-0371Gators fans were bracing for a historic beatdown in the Swamp versus the Vols -- imagine their surprise when they were actually treated to a game. It was a little too close for comfort, but Florida's defense ensured it collected its 13th straight win.
2 (2)Texas3-0353Redemption, revenge, relief -- regardless of what Texas feels after its win, it's one win closer to the goal Texas Tech denied the Horns last season. UT slumbered through the first half but put away a pesky Tech team in the second half in a 34-24 win.
3 (4)Alabama (1)3-0352With USC's fall, Alabama emerges as the team with the best case to break the Gators-Longhorns deadlock at the top -- and deservedly so. The Crimson Tide pummeled North Texas 53-7 in their highest-scoring output since 2001.
4 (6)California3-0303It turns out Cal needed only a new conference and a different time zone to cure its recent road woes. Five touchdowns from Jahvid Best didn't hurt either, as the Bears topped Minnesota 35-21. Pac-10 play begins next week with a visit to Oregon.
5 (5)Penn State3-0301The exhibition season is over as Penn State aced its final tuneup before Big Ten play begins with a dominating win over Temple. Evan Royster rushed for 134 yards and the Nittany Lions held the Owls to just 46 yards rushing.

My Email from 9/3/09

1) Texas - If we are picking for how we think the final poll will be after the championship, then yes, I picked a monster upset. The only reason I don't have Florida winning is because everyone expects them too, which rarely happens in college football. I think Texas pulls the upset in the big game>
2) Florida - In the last drive of the title game the kicker from Texas becomes an instant legend. He becomes lore. Florida comes up just short.
3) Penn State - Penn State goes undefeated this year and almost gets a bid to the title game but because it plays in the Big Ten, gets D-nide. They win there bowl game and end up in third.
4) Alabama - There defense carries them to another top five finish.
5) Cal - Here's my surprise pick. They handle their schedule. J'havid Best (Sp?) becomes a legit Heisman contender. They win their bowl game and dance to number 5.

Coaching Internship: Surviving

As a follow up to my earlier blog, Notre Dame - 2009, I'd like to note that my prediction of their year is coming to fruition. (See quote from Mark Schlabach)

Granted they are a lot better than prior years but the season is young and if it weren't for a late interception versus Michigan State, they'd be sitting at 1-2.

What we thought we knew: Notre Dame is back.
What we know: The Fighting Irish aren't there yet.

Notre Dame
After three games, it's pretty clear that Charlie Weis has upgraded Notre Dame's talent. But the Fighting Irish lost to Michigan 38-34 in their second game and nearly fell to Michigan State before holding on for a 33-30 victory Saturday.
Now Notre Dame has to play the rest of the season without its best player, wide receiver Michael Floyd, who broke his collarbone against the Spartans. Notre Dame's soft schedule doesn't seem so fluffy now, either. After playing at Purdue on Saturday, the Irish face consecutive home games against ranked opponents: No. 24 Washington and No. 12 Southern California. The three-game stretch to close the season looks more daunting, too: at Pittsburgh, home against Connecticut and at Stanford.

Poker Face

This past week everyone was getting on Lane Kiffin for rescinding his comments about Florida. Commentators were laughing at the way Lane went from bashing the Gator's to singing their praises. Guess they weren't able to read his poker face.

I think Lane pulled a terrific tactical move and that we're dealing with a pretty smart guy. First, he fired up the program with strong words. He instantly found success, meeting two major goals - recruiting and placing Tennessee back in the national vocabulary. This past week he did nothing but praise the Gators, building them up as the best team to ever play and look at what happened next. Lane Kiffin and the Tennessee Volunteers went into the Swamp and kept Tim Tebow and Urban Myer at bay. Florida never had a chance to run up the score and Tennessee might have even showed the rest of the SEC just how to beat the defending national champions. The brilliance of Lane's strategy comes in hyping the Gator's and then by loosing by such a small margin. Now, Kiffin can go back to Knoxville touting that his team barely lost to the "best team in college football, led by perhaps the best college quarterback to ever play" (his quote went something like that). Plus, he essentially took the pressure off of his team prior to the game. His players could prepare mentally while he answered media questions.

Lane Kiffin got the last laugh. He will be able to use this game as a wonderful recruiting tool and he can feel pretty good about next year's meeting in Neyland stadium. I don't know if coaches would ever admit to a moral victory, but after this past Saturday, I'm sure Lane had a big smirk on his face all the way back to Rocky Top.

Finally, I should mention that I was one of the ones calling Lane out as too brash back in May. Guess you could say I too am singing a different tune...

Pat Forde also seems to think the Gator's weren't able to wipe the smirk from Lane's face.Enjoy.

SportsCenter's Not Top 10 Plays - ESPN VIDEO

Oh those Met's......

Pride On The Rise?

Hopefully as UVM accepts larger and larger freshman classes, the incoming students are like Eli - more interested in Catamount Athletics. UVM would benefit from a student body filled with pride, who display their school colors at home games. Fans such as Eli will help UVM have more of a home advantage, especially at the Gut. For a fan who believe in wearing school colors to games, this piece is promising and I look forward to seeing how many people follow Eli's lead.

Beano, Likes Who He Likes

He may be the Pope of College Football, but it is obvious that Beano Cook only likes talking to Ivan Maisel. He is especially short tempered with radio hosts who try to elaborate controversies and exaggerate story lines. I enjoy every minute of it. Keep doing what you're doing Beano - quiet entertaining.

Side Note:
Doesn't it seem as though Jay Reali, host of ESPN's Around the Horn, dislikes Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe? Just an observation.

Not Home Sweet Home

As I was watching the Ga. Tech Miami game last night and heard references to the Miami teams of old, I began to wonder if they really could return to national prominence on a yearly basis. I came to the conclusion that they have one major obstacle - Landshark stadium.

The stands were not filled, the noise was low, and the baseball field took something away aesthetically. The home field advantage is non existent at Landshark stadium. Plus, there's no pageantry there. When I look around at the top programs in the country, especially teams from the SEC, home field advantage is huge. The Swamp, the Big House, Touchdown Jesus, Between the Hedges, The Coliseum, The Shoe, Happy Valley, and Death Valley provide a 12th Man (quick reference to Aggieland) if you will. Landshark stadium will never created a home field atmosphere, something Miami will need if they truly want to return to the glory days. They need a home field where opposing players dread playing, especially at night.

Plus, I imagine a large aspect of recruiting is showing off a team's game day environment. Everything from traditions, tailgating, students sections, and stadium have a role recruiting. Miami's tame stadium along with it's lack of history will hamper recruiting efforts, particularly for those players looking for history, pageantry, and tradition (all of the things that make college football great).

To say these things pains me, as a Miami fan, but I believe them to be true. Hopefully Landshark stadium will not be permanent and the Canes will be relocated to a proper home. Until such time, Miami will have difficulty maintaining there dominance as they did in the 80's and 90's.

As for this year though - fear the U.

Doubt Enters Buckeye Country

As a Michigan fan it scratches me right where I itch to read that Jim Tressel's play calling is coming under fire. It does seem as though he has struggled with winning the Big Game, with the obvious exception of the 2002 National Championship win versus Miami. This, coupled with the fact that Michigan had a thrilling victory against a nationally ranked Notre Dame team, might be causing the Buckeye faithful to be a bit nervous and jealous.

I say jealous because of the following article. It appears OSU fans' excitement for field position, defense, and special teams play is waning. Looks like Ohio State fans want to have a play caller similar to Rich Rod - innovative.

Plus, I think nervousness is a factor as Ohio State fans look ahead and see they have to travel to the Big House to play a vastly improved Michigan team. Not too mention Tate Forcier has already had a huge 4th quarter game winning drive, something that Ohio State fans are still waiting for from Pryor.

Go Blue!

Tressel under fire but will still call plays

Dominance ≠ Imperial

Do you think Roger Federer asked to have the "Imperial March" played as he enters the court?

I doubt it. Roger seems to be incredibly modest, especially considering he's ranked number one in the world and will go down as the greatest tennis player ever. By definition modesty means free from ostentation or showy extravagance. So to the people who decided Roger should enter to the "Imperial March", please stop. You are interfering with Roger's modesty, a character trait not often found in professional athletes. Plus, there is no correlation between the song's attitude and Roger Federer. Playing this song is unfitting and clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of Roger. Finally, living legends don't need theme music.

The "Imperial March" was composed by John Williams for the film, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and played whenever Darth Vader appears.

Merriman Can't Handle His Tequila

Prior to the NFL season starting , I listed five story lines I was especially interested following this year. Among them, was Shawne Merriman and his bum knee. Although he has been making headlines, the attention has been focused on his knee but rather his behavior.

Reportedly, Merriman chocked and assaulted Tila Tequila.

I was correct about Shawne making the news, just got the reason wrong.

What a thug.

T.O. Hurt - Is Anyone Surprised?

I wrote before the start of the NFL season that I was interested in seeing if T.O. would bring his same old same and dance to Buffalo or would he be different. In that blog I asked if he was even relevant anymore, hinting to the fact that he isn't and wouldn't contribute.

T.O. is hurt and hasn't played since the first preseason game. Figures.

Conclusion  - same old T.O.

Can Kelly Take a Mulligan?

What will Chip Kelley do with LeGarrette Blount?
What will Chip Kelly do about his anemic offense?
How will Chip Kelly focus his team for Purdue?

I doubt Chip Kelly foresaw his first game as Oregon head coach going like that.

Take the Field Tribute

Starting on September 5th, 2009, Ohio State football fans will welcome the Navel Academy into The Shoe with a new tradition - Take the Field Tribute. Instead of boo's and taunts, the Mids will be welcomed into Ohio Stadium to the sound of over 100,000 cheering fans.

Ohio State hopes other teams will honor our country's service academies in this manor from now on and so do I. Therefore, I'm pleased to include the video that the Ohio State athletic department is circulating to promote this new tradition.

For the first time in history, I'm looking forward to watching kickoff from an Ohio State game that doesn't include Michigan. Go Navy!

P.S. - Now let's see if Notre Dame is classy enough to also salute the Mids when they visit. My guess is yes, they will put aside their massive ego but only because of peer pressure.

RALPHIE

Notre Dame - 2009

I'm not gonna say that ND will go 6-6 this year, but I certainly don't think they'll be headed to a BCS bowl game as I've heard some analysts say. Analysts state that ND's schedule this year is easy, which I disagree with. There are several teams on their schedule that could beat them - Nevada, Michigan, Michigan State, USC, and Stanford.

An important fact to keep in mind is that whenever a school plays Notre Dame, they play their hardest. The fact that Nevada, who has a very good QB of their own, plays ND in their season opener means they could surprise the Fighting Irish. I may be wrong but I've always heard that the most improvement comes between the first and second game, which is good news for the Maize and Blue. Stanford will be another tough test. I love the fact that ND will have to travel for their final game and play a much improved Cardinal team.

And finally we come to Jimmy Clausen, a quarterback who still has a lot to prove. He had a spectacular game against Hawaii, but that was one game with plenty of time to prepare. During the season he'll have to prep for new defensive schemes each week.

I predict that ND will be better than 6-6 but not by a whole lot. Charlie Weis's decided schematic advantage will be proved untrue and his massive ego as well as the fat in his pants will be shown the door.

My First Response

I've always enjoyed reading the comments left by readers at the end of ESPN articles and today I made a comment. My first.

Aside from this blog, my comment today was the first time I really put one of my opinions out there, because let's be honest, I probably don't have many readers - yet. Now, I'm anxiously waiting for a response.

Here's what Ivan Maisel wrote today in his 3 point stance:

3. The complainers say that college football is unfair because the national championship stays within the same small group of 20 or so teams. Maybe so. But a playoff won't solve that issue. Name the sport that isn't dominated by a small percentage of teams. Lakers, Yankees, Steelers, FC Barcelona, etc., commit the resources and have the interest to win. Same with the Floridas and USCs.

I wrote:

To address your point, a playoff might not keep the top 20 or so teams from playing for a championship most years, but tournament play offers a chance for participating schools to vie for a championship. Watching the same teams compete each year can become stale, in my opinion. I've listed some examples of teams outside of the top 20 or so that made their respective tournaments fun to watch and added the element of surprise, something many sports fan enjoy.

UVM Catamounts - 2009 Frozen Four
Fresno State Bulldogs - 2008 CWS Champions
Davidson College Wildcats - Regional Finals of the 2008 NCAA Tournament
UMass Minutemen - 2006 Lacrosse National Title runner ups

So yes, most sports are dominated by a few teams, but at least in tournament play fans can hope for a Cinderella. College football cuts underdogs out of the title hunt before the first game of the season.

It feels great to respond to Ivan, who is someone I greatly admire. I'm already looking forward to commenting again.

At this point I'm tired of hearing about Brett Favre. He's old, inconsistent, and a risk.

He's a wonderful leader but after years of abuse, his body won't get it done.

I wish he had stayed retired the first time. If he had, he would have gone out as a hero - untarnished. Today, I feel bad for Brett Favre. You're looking at a man who cannot admit he's old. He's a shadow of his old self. Sure he'll be remembered, but the damage of playing too long is done.

Brett Favre - go home at catch fish.

P.S. When Brett finally does retire, it'll be very anticlimactic. Few people will say boo. This is a point that I haven't heard many talking about but I think my prediction will come true. He'll leave the game will no fanfare and no parade.

Zack Telander

Zack Telander was tabbed by Inside Lacrosse magazine as the 30th best midfielder in their upcoming recruiting issue. Guess where he's headed? The University of Vermont.

Telander should be one of Vermont's biggest pickups ever and a sign that things are coming around for Vermont.

2009-10 NFL Season

Normally I am not interested in the NFL at all. I'm interested in college football. However, there are several headlines this year that I will be paying close attention to - a top five if you will.

Here they are, in descending order.

1. Micheal Vick - Will any team take a chance on Vick? How much of his athleticism will be gone, if any? If signed, will PETA and other groups protests him at every stadium? Has he changed? My opinion is no, he hasn't changed. He probably won't run dog fights anymore, but I'm sure he'll still run around with suspect people and do questionable things. I'm sure a You Tube video (or some other story) will surface showing Vick with some of his buddies, "makin it rain", mouthing words to the camera, popping their shirts, or using some thugged out sign language to display their home state or city. Go get 'em Vick.

2. Tom Brady - Will he come back as good as ever or will his knee injury prevent him playing at the highest level? I've read articles recently that question his toughness, and I'm curious if these are just hyperbole or something actually worth talking about.

3. T.O - Will it be the same old song and dance, only this time in Buffalo? Is he even relevant anymore?

4. Shawne Merriman - Here's a guy that not a lot of folks are talking about right now, but will be coming back after a major injury - torn knee ligaments. Due to his own stupidity he tried to play last year, against Doctors recommendations, rather than forgoing the season to try and recuperate. I'm hoping for a "told you so" opening game for Merriman, where his knee gets bashed in and it ends his career. Once that happens he'll have plenty of time to contemplate the stupidity of his actions.

5. Matthew Stafford - There's no way he will be able to live up to his contract. That being said, I'm curious to see how he does.
